Lens Artists Challenge #400 – The Rule of Three

Lens Artists Challenge #400 – The Rule of Three

Before getting into Tina’s challenge, let me observe that this is Challenge Number 400 – Quite a milestone! I’ve only been around for about a year and a half. My first post to Lens-Artists was Challenge #336 – Only One Picture. But some have been around far longer – For all 400?! My congratulations to them.

Tina’s challenge this week is “The Rule of Three.” I was never aware of a rule of three, but after reading Tina’s post, it does make sense. Tina has some excellent examples. Here are my offerings.

The featured image above, and to the left, “Three Red Roses,” exhibits this concept well; two roses would be too few, four would be too many.

(Click on this image, and those below, for alternate views including a full-screen option.)

Searching through my photos, this monochrome image “Sprint Tree,” jumped out at me. The flowers in front are, of course, the focal point and the main subject, but the three tree branches behind also exemplify the rule of threes. Again, two would be too few, four too many. The result is a perfectly proportioned image

Here are two more images.

I seem to have many photographs of roses! For a change, here are three tulips.

Finally, here are two-and-a-half orchids.

This was a fun challenge. I wish I could find more photographs of things in threes beside flowers. Thanks to Tina for this week’s challenge. I’ll enjoy seeing what others come up with. Meanwhile, everyone have a good week!

  1. The flowers look beautiful in groups of three. I love all of the vibrant colors.

    1. I agree. I never knew there was a “rule,” but it does make sense. Thanks, Beth.

  2. A lovely post Joanne, I love your flowers, especially the “three roses” toward the end. The final image of the orchids is really special

    1. Thanks, Tina. The roses in the middle is my own favorite. I’m especially glad you liked the orchids.

  3. You have a wonderful collection of flowers.

    1. Thank you, Teresa.

  4. A beautiful floral set, Joanne! Great examples. My favorite is your opening photo, a marvelous composition with the dark background and treatment that almost seems like the roses are glowing with an internal light.

    1. Thank you, John. That one was shot with studio light which raised the colors but blacked out the background.

  5. While all these shots are excellent, and illustrate the principle well, it’s that first one that steals the show for me! And you’re absolutely right to say that ‘ two roses would be too few, four would be too many’.

    1. Thank you, Sarah. See my response to John above regarding the opening image. I was never explicitly aware of the “rule of threes,” but I clearly favored that idea in many compositions where 2 is too few, 4 too many.

  6. Gorgeous flowers, Joanne. The roses are my favourites this week.

    1. Thank you, Sofia.
