Hello, all. This Joanne, pretty well recovered and about to return to the land of the living. This week’s challenge is by Johnbo, “Shadowed.”
The feature image above and to the left is the remnants of the Harvey Hotels restaurant and inn at the Painted Desert in Arizona. The Harvey Hotels and Restaurants were funded by Fred Harvey at stops along the Atcheson Topeka and Santa Fe railway, and immortalized by Judy Garland in the film, The Harvey Girls (Here, and here). The Harvey inns were mostly built in the late 1800’s. The Harvey House at Painted Desert was not built until about 1925 and was designed for auto tourists and travellers on Rte 66.
The Atcheson Topeka and Santa Fe was itself quite historic. Eventually running from Chicago to San Francisco, the AT&F owned its own tracks and opened the west to travel and settlement. The AT& was the first railroad in America to have a full service dining car and the first to have dome cars on its trains.
(Update: The images were in the incorrect order when I first posted this. Sorry. Now corrected.)
This photograph of stairs at Grace Farms in New Canaan, Connecticut, shows the effects of shadows in an image very well. “Grace Farms is a cultural and humanitarian center… focusing on nature, arts, justice, community, and faith, on 80 acres of natural landscape.” The center features original and fascinating architecture, as in this image.
Finally (I’m restarting slowly), I have this image of the Guggenheim Museum in New York City. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, the Guggenheim exhibits a unique and distinctive architecture, specifically in the spiral shape of the main building (and the galleries inside). Post-capture processing creates this somewhat abstract image of the exterior.
That’s my modest selection for this week. (Click on each image for another view and a full-screen option.) Thanks to Johnbo for an interesting challenge. I hope to see you all next week.
