“Visions of Nature” is a collection of more than fifty digitally processed abstract and post-expressionist images (78 pages. 54 images. Large-Format Landscape, 13×11 in, 33×28 cm, hardbound) revealing nature in stunning colors and provocative visions. In this collection I have sought to explore the concept of “defamilarization” (Russian: [Schklovsky] Ostranenie) according to which a function of art is to render the familiar as unfamiliar in order to inspire fresh perspectives, new ways of seeing the colors, shapes, and patterns of familiar objects. Most images are abstract, developed with a personal process. Includes an introductory essay on the inspirations behind the series, including leading Twentieth Century figures and schools of art, including Viktor Schklovsky, who originated the idea of “defamiliarization;” Abstract Expressionism; and the artists Vassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, and Jackson Pollock.
