Lens Artists Challenge #376 – Wings

Lens Artists Challenge #376 – Wings

This week is Beth’s turn to challenge us, and she has chosen an interesting theme – Wings. Regarding the feature image above, Beth did say we could do “art work featuring fantasy beings like dragons and fairies” and angels. Note that the owl also has wings. The image was generated by AI; I used both Firefly, which is a part of Adobe Photoshop, and Gemini, Google’s AI.

I don’t actually have too many images of wings – I don’t shoot birds and don’t go out of my way for insects. I’ve never been able to catch butterflies. So I’ll start with this.

Well, they’re wings, soft of… And it’s a Phalaenopsis Orchid, also called a “Moth Orchid.”

Visiting Santa Fe, New Mexico, some years ago, I found these angels. They were along the Riverwalk and across from the Cathedral.

These two were fairly new when I saw them years ago. Since then, five more have been done ( = the seven Archangels) Each angel is carved from a single log of wood by artist Jose A. Lucero, known as the “Picasso Santero.”  (A santero refers to an artist that makes religious images.)

This is an ukeyo-e drawing which I did recently (on the computer), featuring a couple of nice yellow birds.

And here is a beautiful egret which I shot during Spring in Bruce Park, Greenwich.
His wings are folded, but the egret is such a beautiful bird in any pose or situation.

Finally, my own challenge: Find the bee amidst the flowers. (They’re Echinacea, also known as cone flowers.)

Well, I know I’ve stretched the terms of Beth’s challenge somewhat, but I hope you have enjoyed these images nonetheless. Thank you, Beth, for the inspiration. Next week Ann-Christine will be hosting the challenge, and I will look forward to that. Have a good week.

  5. I’ve been to Santa Fe several times over the years, and I must admit that I have never seen those angels. It looks like I need to make another trip. I enjoyed your response to the challenge this week, that AI cover photo really speaks to the topic.

    1. Thank you, John. The angels were each carved out of a single log, each the main trunk of a dead tree. Little was done, I think, to prepare or preserve the wood. As a result, the angels have had to be removed several times for restoration and preservation. Since this costs substantial amounts, the angels were in storage while funds were raised. The angels were carved in 2005. They were damaged by rain and rodents, and substantially. restored in 2013. I understand that they have had to be removed again since then.

  6. I did really enjoy your take on the challenge 🙂 The angels from Santa Fe are lovely and the egret very elegant in that beautiful setting.
