This week’s Lens Artists Challenge comes from Beth at Wandering Dawgs. It’s a good one, but alas, for me, a double or triple challenge – I have no sporting events to show. This surprised me, since I’m a huge sports fan, but after trolling through all my libraries I could find little. Then I hit on this idea: One of my favorite places is Newport, Rhode Island, on America’s eastern coast. Newport is widely regarded as the world’s sailing capital. I photographed a visit several years ago to what was once the International Yacht Restoration School, and is now the IYRS School of Technology and Trades. Students learn yacht building and carpentry, materials and composite science, yacht design (including digital design), and marine technology and engineering. So I’ve included some photographs below.
The feature image above was created with the aid of a generative AI (Adobe Firefly). It took a good number of tries to get the prompt right and to produce just this image (so I can claim a bit of my creativity in the process).
The Coronet, an 1885 schooner, is the largest and oldest grand schooner yacht. It is being rebuilt and restored by the IYRS School of Technology and Trades. Below are a couple of images of the hull being rebuilt.
Each student is responsible for designing and building a sailboat. The day that I visited, the school was on a midterm break, and so the pictures don’t show students at work. Nevertheless, here are some images around the work areas of the school.
So that’s my (albeit limited) offering for this week’s challenge. Thanks to Beth for her challenge and thoughtful ideas and images. Next week, Anne will bring us a challenge. If you would like more information on the Lens Artists Challenge, go here.
