Flower of the Week – Peruvian Lilies

Flower of the Week is the Peruvian Lily (Alstroemeria aurea). Alstromeria are native to South America, but found all over the mostly temperate regions of the world. This species, Alstroemeria aurea, is native to Chile and Argentina. Alstromeria species and varieties are the most plentiful flowers in Chile. Peruvian lilies are plentiful as cultivated flowers in the United States, where most Alstromeria hybridization got started. Unfortunately, in some areas including Australia, Alstromeria aurea has escaped and become invasive weeds.
