Flower of the Week – Celosia

Flower of the Week – Celosia

This week’s flower is a Celosia, also known as Cockscomb. The image is a highly edited close-up photograph. Celosia is a popular decorative garden flower. In Western Africa and Southeast Asia, Celosias are grown for food (both flowers and leaves are edible).

  1. Celosía in Spanish means ‘jalousie.’ I wondered if there was any connection to the flower, but according to the American Heritage Dictionary the genus name was created as New Latin Cēlosia, from Greek kēlos, dry, burnt, the reference being to the flower’s colors.

    1. That’s interesting. Although I don’t particularly think of the flower’s colors as “dry” or “burnt.”
