Fitzroy, Melbourne

Fitzroy, Melbourne

Fitzroy is a suburb of Melbourne, in Victoria, Australia. Fitzroy is where I lived and worked when I was in Melbourne. I really liked it. Fitzroy is a great place with a bohemian culture and lots of music, great bars and restaurants, street art, and trendy retail and nightlife. The image here is of Brunswick Street, the heart of Fitzroy. It was shot with a long lens, hence the foreshortening.

I think the Brunswick St trams have been upgraded since I was there.

This is an example of Fitzroy’s street art for which the suburb is especially kknown. I’ve posted this before, but I wanted to feature it again. It was on Rose St. and by Deb (her sig is at center of the image). This, of course, was a while ago. But I’ve learned that Deb is alive and well. She is now traveling the world, based in Los Angeles (after San Francisco) but returning to Melbourne often.

A wonderfully extensive and a both past and current collection of Deb’s work is here and here.

  1. Fitzroy is a great part of the city. I haven’t been in there for a while. I used to live near there.

    1. I lived in Fitzroy for about a year before I moved to Sydney. Even after I was in Sydney, I returned often to Melbourne for business. Each time I would stay in Fitzroy. I loved Sydney but Fitzroy was special. As an aging hippie I thought Fitzroy was so cool. Unfortunately, perhaps because I was in the photography, I wasn’t taking many pictures for myself in those days.
