Across from the Cathedral in Santa Fe NM, along the Riverwalk, stand seven angels each carved from a single log of wood by artist Jose A. Lucero, known as the “Picasso Santero.” (A santero refers to an artist that makes religious images.) They are the seven Archangels.
When I visited about 20 years ago, these were the only angels that had been completed. Since then, all seven were completed, but they have fallen into disrepair (mostly the ravages of time – they’re all wood and exposed to the elements). The city of Santa Fe has been raising funds to repair or replace each angel. For more information on the angels and Jose Lucero, go here.
