Westport Point Harbor

Westport Point Harbor

The village of Westport, Massachusetts, first settled by English colonists in 1670, was so named because it was the westernmost part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Westport Point is a historic district encompassing the early development of Westport. Situated on the Westport River, there is today a small harbor (pictured in this image, left and above). Beginning in the mid to late 18th Century, Westport Point developed mainly around shipping, often outfitting ships built upstream. The streets of the historic district contain numerous well-preserved homes built by prosperous sea captains in the 19th Century.

This photograph has been in my collection for several years. For this post, I have significantly re-edited the image to improve the monochrome rendering. This image pictures the Westport Point harbor as it might have appeared during the 19th Century.
