One Four Challenge Week 4 – Hammond Gardens

One Four Challenge Week 4 – Hammond Gardens

This is the final variation for the June series, the scene in Hammond Gardens. I have successfully concluded my goal of doing all variations with straightforward image adjustments – No Photoshop or AI. For this variation, I did use a preset (in Luminar) for most of it, but it’s all exposure, contrast, color and tonality, and light. I think this is my favorite variation of the series. The image has a nice painterly quality. It’s amazing how straightforward adjustments of image qualities can produce distinct differences in appearance, variations in the overall impression conveyed by the image.

As a reminder, the Hammond Gardens are a wonderful plce in North Salem, NY.

This concludes the current series of variations. Don’t forget to check out Leanne’s posts. A new series for July will start next week, Wednesday here in the western hemisphere, Thursday in Australia and eastern Asia.

This will be a good time for you to join us. It seems we haven’t been able to generate too much interest. But the One Four is a great exercise, a cool way to learn new things, develop new editing techniques. Won’t you join us next week? (For more information about the One Four Challenge, you can go here.)

Here is the side-by-side comparison of the original and this variation.

  1. An infinite number of variations exist, and none of them match what our eyes and brain perceived when looking at the scene. For some photographers the goal may be to come as close as possible, while others go for a pleasing image without any necessary fidelity to “reality.”

    1. I may sometimes be of the first school, but more often the latter. In fact, several years ago, in an advanced photo class I was taking, I came across what became a philosophy – Viktor Schklovsky’s concept of defamiliarization in which he posits that the purpose of art is to render the familiar as unfamiliar. For me, it meant that photographs could render images in ways that would inspire new ways of seeing, fresh perspectives on the colors, shapes, and patterns of nature. If you haven’t, check out my “Visions of Nature” gallery (See it on the menu at the top.) If you do, let me know what you think. I’d value your opinion..

  2. I think this one might be my favourite, I really like the warmth of it. Looks like spring or summer. They are all good Joanne, but yeah I like this one.

    1. Thanks for your comment, Leanne. I value your feedback. This variation is definitely my favorite.

  3. I really like this one too Joanne.. the warmth is very inviting.
So interesting to read your chosen philosophy too.. I share this at times 🙂

    1. Thank you Robyn. I’m glad you liked this one.
