The Monday monochrome this week is this image of the bark of the cork oak tree (quercus suber). The shapes and patterns, the ridges and the valleys in this image are fascinating. The bark of the mature cork oak trees can be harvested periodically to provide the material for a wealth of products, from the corks of wine bottles to insulating materials for heat and sound.
The cork oak grows in mediterranean climates. This image was shot in central coastal California which has a mediterranean climate year-round.
