Monday Monochrome – Hopi Lands, Arizona

The image above (and left) depicts the part of Arizona that belongs to the Hopi Reservation. The (very straight) road in the image comes up from Winslow, Arizona, probably known by most from the Eagles song. The US government inexplicably set the Hopi reservation right in the middle of the Navajo reservation, an action that…

Monday Monochrome – Gerbera Daisies

I worked on this image of Gerbera Daisies in color for a while, without getting anything I liked. So I tried a black and white conversion. That was it! Some improvements to exposure and toning, and an increase in sharpness, produced this week’s Monday Monochrome.

Monday Monochrome – Three Flowers

It’s time for a Monday Monochrome. I’ve selected this image of three Ranunculus flowers beginning to open (Ranunculus asiaticus). The beautiful shapes formed by the petals are beginning to show. The patterns in the flowers are set off against the apparently haphazard layout of the photograph.

Westport Point Harbor

The village of Westport, Massachusetts, first settled by English colonists in 1670, was so named because it was the westernmost part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Westport Point is a historic district encompassing the early development of Westport. Situated on the Westport River, there is today a small harbor (pictured in this image, left and…

Monday Monochrome – Old Wood over the Canyon

For this week’s Monday Monochrome, I offer this image from the south rim of the Grand Canyon. This old wood is what remains from a tree, probably victim of a lightning strike, that must have stood proudly on this spot. I always find images like this full of meaning and emotion: determination, longevity, persistence, courage.

Monday Monochrome – Office Building Architecture

For this week’s Monday Monochrome, I offer this image of the exterior shape of an office building. The subtle curves on the side serve to soften the building’s appearance and all curves on the side lead up to the straight line formed across the top. Mathematics, anyone? (The building is in Greenwich, CT.)

Monday Monochrome – Abiqui Hills

The Abiqui Hills is one of the loveliest regions of northern New Mexico. The small village of Abiqui is well-known as the home where Georgia O’Keeffe lived and painted. In the image, we can see the wide open spaces and the hills and mesas that so attracted O’Keeffe. This image is the Monday Monochrome for…

Monday Monochrome – New Mexico Cactus Garden

The image for this week’s Monday Monochrome is this picture of Prickly Pear Cactus, endemic to New Mexico. Prickly pears are deeply embedded in New Mexico’s culture and cuisine. The New Mexico Prickly Pear Festival celebrates the plant’s versatility, showcasing its use in food, beverages, and even medicinal applications. New Mexico is home to at least 20…

Monday Monochrome – Lilies

Something a little different for Monday Monochrome this week… It’s not black-and-white, but it is monochrome, toned a little differently. I think it suggests a different view of, maybe a different insight into, these lilies.

Monday Monochrome – High Country

This week’s Monday Monochrome is California’s “High Country,” in the San Gabriel Mountains. The San Gabriels, among the most rugged of California’s lie due north of Los Angeles, separating the Los Angeles Basin and the Mohave Desert. The highest peak is Mt. San Antonio, in the distance in the center of the photo, also known…
